The Diocese of Louisiana is one church, faithful to Jesus Christ united in mission and reaching out to the unchurched. We live in joyous expectation of the power and grace and divine compassion in our lives.
Christ Episcopal Church of Slidell was founded in 1906 with a petition inspired by Mrs. Carrie H. Comfort. We built a green chapel at the corner of Third and Fremaux in 1922. We received our first resident Deacon-in-Charge in 1953, and became a parish on January 20, 1958. We moved to our current location at the corner of Seventh St. and Pennsylvania Ave. around 1955, dedicated Comfort Hall in 1956, and built our current Sanctuary building about 1965. In March 1984 the church purchased the Michigan Avenue property known as Wheeler House. We retired our church mortgage in 1998. In August 2005, our facilities sustained only moderate damage from Hurricane Katrina, and we ministered to the Slidell community by distributing relief supplies and providing housing and coordination for volunteer recovery workers. We finally completed repairs to our facilities in March, 2008, with the replacement of the church facade.
As we emerged from the physical and spiritual pain of Katrina, we have
adopted a new mission statement, “We Strive to Welcome, Worship,
Teach, and Serve in the Name of Christ
” . We have begun to align
our ministry, programs, and budget to these four cardinal points.
Christ Episcopal Church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana . We are part of the Episcopal Church USA which is the church body in the USA, and is in turn part of the worldwide Anglican Communion .
We strive to Welcome, Worship, Teach, and Serve in the name of Christ.
